Back.

She knocks on the door and waits.
Patiently.
Politely.
Like her parents always told her.

She laughs at her stupidity.
Forgetfulness.
Amnesia?
This is her door, her house.

Her keys are where they’ve always been.
Hidden.
Concealed.
She reaches into the top of the little lantern gracing her doorstep.

She slowly opens the door and peers inside.
Cautious.
Fearful.
Has anything changed while she’s been away?

The living room, kitchen and bedroom are the same.
Orderly.
Perfect.
Like they had been cleaned just yesterday.

But the bathroom- Aah, that’s a different story.
Disarray.
Hurricane.
She remembers too well.

How she decided to give up.
Slide.
Collide.
Enough was enough, she told herself.

The date was marked on her calendar.
Red.
Circle.
She’d always been praised for how organised she was.

She planned the evening, created an ambience.
Candles.
Music.
She even bought an expensive bottle of red wine.

Swaying her head to the tune of Joplin.
Heart.
Piece.
Living like she’d always wanted to.

She tilted her head back and looked at her ceiling.
Cracked.
Discoloured.
She laughed bitterly.

Walked to the bathroom.
Sure.
Measured.
9 and a half steps.

The rest is a blur.
Blood.
Sirens.
She woke up in a hospital bed, concerned faces all around.

She was sent for therapy, told to “open up”.
Couch.
Rambling.
She was sent to a ‘facility’.

Endless corridors of insanity.
White.
Closed.
She was confined to a room.

‘The mad suicidal one’, they called her.
Snigger.
Point.
She was immune.

She took her pills religiously.
Red.
White.
They said there was remarkable improvement, record time.

She was allowed to go today.
Free.
B R E A T H E .
She walked all the way home.

She bought a CD of Joplin and an expensive bottle of red wine.
Fools.
Blind.
She lay down in the tub, and reached for the cupboard behind her.

She took out the blade she had hidden under the bottle of Kleenol.
Clean.
Slice.
She thought to herself: “It was worth the wait”

She slid back.
